Low-Income SeniorThe Senior Exemption is available to the majority of homeowners who meet the eligibility criteria and have a total household annual income of $65,000 or less in the calendar year 2022. By "freezing" the equalized assessed value of an eligible property, this exemption offers substantial savings. This exemption must be filed annually. The deadline to file is closed. Persons with Disabilities Exemption Homeowners who are eligible for this exemption this year must either become disabled or become disabled during the 2023 tax year. This exemption offers an annual reduction in the equalized assessed value of a property, resulting in property tax savings. Due to new state legislation, this exemption will automatically be renewed.  The deadline to file is closed. Homeowners can file for a Certificate of Error to correct past tax bills.
Returning Veterans Exemption For each taxable year in which veterans return from active duty in armed conflict, they are granted a reduction in the equalized assessed value of their property. Veterans with Disabilities Exemption Offers veterans with a service-connected disability, as certified by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, a reduction in the equalized assessed value (EAV) of their property. The quantity of EAV deductions is contingent upon the severity of the disability. This exemption must be filed annually.  The deadline to file is closed. Long-Time Homeowner Exemption This exemption is available to only 2% of homeowners in Cook County. This exemption offers householders an expanded Homeowner Exemption that is not subject to a maximum exemption amount. In addition to satisfying the income and residency requirements, applicants must also demonstrate a substantial assessment increase that surpasses the maximum amounts established by the state legislature. Potentially eligible residents will receive applications via postal mail. This exemption must be filed annually.  The deadline to file is closed. Home Improvement Exemption Permits householders to add modifications to their home that increase its value without being taxed on the added value for a period of up to four years, up to $75,000. This exemption lasts up to four years. No application is required. Cook County office office automatically applies this exemption to eligible properties.
